For Educators

When National Pet Week (NPW) is celebrated May 6-12 2007, it will be the 26th Anniversary observance.

Since its inception in 1981, NPW has had three simple and clear goals: to promote responsible pet ownership, celebrate the human-animal bond, and to increase public awareness of veterinarians and veterinary medicine.

Lesson Plans and Activities

The American Veterinary Medical Association has developed twelve lessons and activity sheets grammar school teachers can download and use in their classrooms during National Pet Week. Each activity is written for a specific grade level and meets national teaching standards in science and language arts. The AVMA is providing a list of links to outside sources as a supplement for educators using the lesson plans.

The National Pet Week Web site (www.petweek.org) features interactive and educational games, downloadable activities and curricula for teachers, and information on pet health issues for owners.

The 2007 sponsors of National Pet Week are: Subaru of America, CarpetOne, Animal Planet, AVMA, and the AVMA Auxiliary.

Classroom poster

The AVMA has created a colorful, two-sided poster that illustrates how veterinarians protect the health of animals, people, and the environment.  Teachers in grades 4-7 can use it to complement a variety of science lessons. Parents and counselors will find it a useful tool for sharing information about how veterinarians impact both animal and human health.
